From Scotland to Chile

After Duncan arrived Chile on 1875, he was hired like an accountant in the factory of alcohol distillation in Santa Fé, Region of the Bio-Bio.
There he met which would be its wife, Dolores Vela, daughter of the Lieutenant Colonel Don Joaquin Vela Arangua and of Doña Mercedes Riquelme del Río.
He bought some land offered from the Municipality of Los Angeles, and a part of this would be destined to build his home, located by the present in Valdivia street corner Avda. Ricardo Vicuña. The house was distinguished by a beautiful red camellia, tall like a tree.
Since November,1880 he worked like an accountant in the Bank of Valparaiso (1). Later he participated in the construction of the viaduct of the Malleco Valley, considered then the highest railroad bridge of the world, an example of architexture which was included within the construction of the railway line between Angol and Traiguén. The railroad bridge was inaugurated by President Jose Manuel Balmaceda October 16, 1890 and in newspapers of that time was indicated that Dolores, his wife, was one of the godmother at the inauguration.
In addition Duncan was one to the founders of the Social Club of Los Angeles and figured in the honors list located at the entrance of the mentioned Club.
The sympathy the community had allways towards Duncan MacVicar was shown in the City Newspaper dedicated to him in an article the day after his death :

"Mr. Mac Vicar returned from a trip to the South where he catched a light cold, wich in few hours turned into a serious peritonitis that in one day concluded with his young life, despite the assistance of distinguished facultatives and the special care of his family.
Duncan Mac Vicar, of English origin, was united by narrow bond to an appreciable family of this city where he has lived for more than 10 years and winning the esteem of his friends and all those who lived close to him and could apreciate his good personal qualitier: franc, friend without challenge, easy for all and in all....(ilegible).., the death of Duncan MacVicar is a true .....(ilegible)...of the good citizen, the death took away the affection of his friends and his owns in the plenitude of his existence "
